(LAS VEGAS) -- Former WBC Middleweight Champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1) was suspended for nine months and fined $900,000 by the Nevada Athletic Commission on Thursday for failing a drug test last year.

The 27-year-old Chavez tested positive for marijuana following his unanimous decision loss to Sergio Martinez on Sept. 15 in Las Vegas. The nine-month ban is retroactive to the day of the fight.

In 2009, Chavez was suspended for seven months by the Nevada Athletic Commission after he tested positive for another banned substance after his fight with Troy Rowland in Las Vegas.
